The Power of Sisterhood: Give to Gain

International Women’s Day is a celebration of strength, resilience and progress, but for me, it is also a celebration of something deeply personal and profoundly powerful, sisterhood.

There is something extraordinary about finding women who truly champion you. Women who support you, hold you up and take a genuine interest in what you do and what you stand for. Women who see you for you, quirks and all, and accept you exactly as you are.

There is no perceived competition, no subtle comparison, no shrinking to make someone else comfortable.  Just mutual respect and a shared desire to see each other succeed, at whatever we choose to pour our energy and passion into.

That kind of sisterhood is POWERFUL.

It gives us the green light to be our authentic selves, without apology, without dilution, without the need to make ourselves smaller to fit someone else’s expectations. It reminds us that we do not have to earn belonging by hiding parts of who we are.

True sisterhood is built on honesty, it is the ability to speak candidly and openly with one another, whether that means expressing our feelings, acknowledging when something has caused hurt, or having the courage to clear the air with kindness and respect.

It is meeting each other exactly where we are.

It is creating a safe space to listen without judgment.

To listen without the need to psychoanalyse.

To listen without trying to fix or resolve.

Sometimes the greatest gift we can give one another is simply presence.

As humans, we are wired for connection, meaningful connection that gives us a sense of belonging. We thrive when we feel seen, heard and valued and in a world that can often feel fragmented and fast-paced, sisterhood offers something grounding and deeply nourishing.

For me, mid-life has been a season of profound change.  Mentally, physically, spiritually, I have shifted and there have been times when it hasn’t been easy. There have been challenges, moments of questioning and periods of letting go, but there has also been enlightenment.

I have come to understand that sometimes we must release what we once held dearly to make space for what aligns with who we are today. New ideas, new relationships, new growth.  The fact is through it all, the women in my life, my sisterhood, have been both anchor and sail.

This year’s theme, Give to Gain, speaks directly to what sisterhood embodies, when we give, we gain.

We give our time, we give our energy, we give kindness, compassion, empathy and unwavering support.

Not because we expect something in return, not because there is a transaction, but because lifting one another elevates us all.

In my day to day life, I am in service to others and their needs and this work brings me immense fulfilment and joy. It is not just what I do, it is my vocation, my purpose, my calling. To be able to support others on their journeys is something I hold with deep gratitude.

I stand on the shoulders of giants, the women who have gone before me, the women who walk beside me now and the women who will come after.

To my sisterhood, you know who you are, thank you.

For your honesty, for your courage, for your compassion, for the way you show up.

Today and everyday, I celebrate you, because when women give to one another, we all gain.
